Occasionally photographs or information appears about a 1-ton, but
without an specific information.
I have listed some such vehicles, and what details I know, here.
I was sent this photograph recently by James Taylor, editor of
Landrover Enthusiast magazine. It seems to show an early IIA One Ton
109" fitted with a specially constructed stakeside/trayback body. Its
is cleary on 900x16 tyres, and appears to have drop shackles, and a
rear mounted fuel tank. The colour would seem to be bronze green, and
the vehicle has deep sills with lamps in the wings. This leads me to
conclude it is a very early machine, quite possibly in chassis number
range 2-6 all of which were built in bronze green and delived to
Windmill and Lewis of bristol in april 1969.
Unfortunately I have no information of a registration number - I wonder
if its still on the road? Another possibility is that it was an export
model, although it does appear to be right hand drive.
In about 1970 the
Automobile Association had a kneeling car transporter built using the
cab and running gear of a IIA 1-ton. The registration and chassis
numbers are not known, however research by Peter Galilee suggests the
vehicle does still exist, in a somewhat dilapidated state.
I have been sent this selection of photographs by overland guru
Jack Jackson. These two late IIA 1 Tons drove some considerable
distance and did hard off-road work in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the
Tenere Desert among other locations. They acompanied Series III 109"
Station Wagons in 1972/3. All photos are copyright Jack Jackson.
YHU113J
- IIA 1-ton fire tender apparently used by Rolls-Royce.
These two IIAs were used as fire tenders in Portugal.
This IIA 1-Ton was used by East Midlands Electricity Board in the
1970s. The registration number was either BNV745K, or BNV746K.
This 1-Ton IIA was used as a fire tender in France.
Unknown Portuguese Series III 1-Ton
fire tender
This Series III was used by Kennings at Welsh Harp. Its identity
is unknown as breakdown trucks at this time ran on trade plates.
These two 1-Tons (one is possibly a IIA) are both ex-Southern
Electricity Board, and were used for overland travelling in the 1980s.
Their subsquent fate is unknown.
This Series III 1-Ton was used by Southern Electricity Board in the Bournemouth area. No other information is known.
STK801L appears to be ex-electricity board. It is no
longer on
the road, but
was obviously much cherished. A V8 was fitted and both front and rear
winches.
SPD604L also appears to be ex-southern electric, but is
registered in Kent.
This could be a cherished transfer. Other photos show the vehicle was
light green originally, and was rebuilt at Dunsfold with a 2.25 diesel
engine. It was apparently rolled and scrapped many years ago. It had an
SEB-modified side opening tailgate and retained the hydraulic winch.
HOW221N is obviously ex-southern electricity, but has lost its
winch and been
fitted with a truck cab and 3/4 tilt. It was last seen in Ireland.
OBL328M was fitted with a cherrypicker platform and
used by Southern
Electricity Board at Oxford for liveline work in the 1970s.
LCF585P was used by Southern Electricty Board in the
Oxford area in the
1970s, and is unusual in that it was built on 7.50x16 tyres.
